Field Experience

Field Experience Opportunity #1 : 

School/ Facility: Delaware County Christian School (Newtown Square, Pennsylvania)

Amount of Time: 39 hours (12/15/14 – 12/19/14)

Age Group: Kindergarten

Experience: During the four consecutive days I was able to work in my host teacher Mrs. Good’s Kindergarten classroom, my eyes were opened to the field of teaching. This practicum was my first real exposure in a classroom and I was able to observe my host teacher and get experience teaching small portions of lessons. Through this experience the most beneficial aspect was that I was able to observe an experienced teacher in the field and learn how to control a classroom, how to understand your students, and how to make learning pleasant. 

This is me with the students of Mrs. Good’s class on my last day of my practicum during their class Christmas party where they made different crafts all of the morning.

Field Experience Opportunity #2: 

School/ Facility: All Nations Community Church (Lynchburg, Virginia)

Amount of Time: 10 hours (9/16/15 – 11/11/15)

Age Group: First Grade

Experience: This experience really opened my eyes to completely new aspects of teaching. For this particular field experience I worked with one first grade student over the duration of a few weeks every Wednesday evening from 4:30 – 6:00 in a church tutoring program in downtown Lynchburg. I assisted her with homework for most of the tutoring session, but there were many sessions where she came empty handed and I had to use the time wisely to teach her, yet still make it an enjoyable time. This experience was so eye opening because I worked in a more Urban setting (which presented different challenges than working in a Suburban setting), had to be extremely flexible, had to come up with mini lesson plans, worked with a student at the first grade level, and learned to balance responsibility as I was assigned the “Tutoring Manager”.

Field Experience Opportunity #3:

School/ Facility : Liberty Christian Academy (Lynchburg, Virginia)

Amount of Time: 21 Hours

Age Group: Kindergarten

Experience: In my several weeks at Liberty Christian Academy observing in Mrs. Green’s Kindergarten class I have learned so much about the education field and myself personally. I have been pushed to work with the students one on one as they work on morning work, I have walked around the classroom to proctor tests, given oral tests, and by the end of the practicum I will have taught my very own lesson plan on rhyming words.  I believe that the best way to learn is by doing something, and not only observing at LCA,  but getting to be completely involved in the classroom has given me great insight as to the kind of classroom I want to have, the way I want to put forth information to my students, and the kind of teacher I want to be.
